BT to repurpose broadband cabinets for EV charging

BT is set to repurpose disused street cabinets - typically used to house telephone and broadband cabling - to be used as EV charging points.

BT plans to roll out a trial to retrofit 60,000 cabinets with a device that allows renewable energy to be shared to a charge point alongside existing broadband cables, with no need to create a new power connection.

The initiative, which was named Innovation Honoree for 2024 for outstanding design and engineering at the Consumer Electronics Show, may be deployed to cabinets that are in use for current copper broadband services or in those due for retirement, depending on the space and power available to each unit.
