Skanska trials electric drilling rig

ECA Member and construction firm Skanska is trialing a plug-in electric drilling rig on the HS2 high-speed rail project in Birmingham.

The drilling rig's diesel engine drive is replaced by an a plug-in electric engine, using an electric sub-station on-site rather than a backup generator.

The company said the electric drilling rig has clocked up 360 hours to date, saving 116 tonnes of CO2 in emissions and cutting noise pollution by up to 50%.

Cementation Skanska operations director, Andrew Entwistle, said to Construction Management, "This type of innovation sits at the heart of our carbon reduction strategy and supports HS2 with its ambition for all its construction sites to be diesel free by 2029.

“Not only has it been valuable for us to work with the eBG33 first hand on a live project, but it’s provided an important opportunity to demonstrate the potential of all-electric heavy plant to the wider industry.”
