Global firms back battery re-use proposals

Global leaders in business consultancy, energy and battery storage are investing heavily in "second life", and even "third life" and "fourth life" uses for lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS), which could be deployed across multiple units in their lifetime.

Research by business consultancy firm McKinsey shows that some 227GWh of unused EV batteries could become available by 2030. This figure could well exceed anticipated demand for BESS units that year. The firm also reports that a handful of companies in the USA and Europe are already actively designing and deploying these so-called "second-life" systems.

Speaking to Energy Storage News, Edward Chiang, CEO of Canada-based Moment Energy, said, "We’ve had big customers ask us to deploy our systems for backup power but we think that’s not the best use of the batteries since there’s so much life left in them and they’re just going to sit there and discharge maybe once a year. Third life batteries could make the most sense for that application.”

David Kieft, Director of Wales-based ECA Member-firm RDM Electrical and past ECA President, said, "We have to attain as many uses as possible from high value components to achieve maximum life cycle values."

ECA has produced guidance for Members to learn more about BESS, and how they can design and deploy them to best suit their clients' needs. Click here to visit ECA's website and learn more.
