Smart meters in half of British homes

Smart meters in half of British homes

Around half of all households in Britain, or 15 million homes, are now connected to the national smart meter network, according to new figures from the Data Communications Company (DCC).

Proponents of the devices argue that by enabling users to keep track of their energy use and costs in real time they can help encourage energy saving behaviours that can help reduce demand for electricity on the national grid and therefore cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

Smart meters are also regarded as crucial to supporting a national energy system increasingly dominated by clean energy technologies such as wind farms, solar power, and electric vehicles, by allowing suppliers to offer time-of-use tariffs and other flexible grid services that incentivise customers to better match demand to supply on the grid.

Angus Flett, CEO of the DCC, said, "This platform is helping 15 million households understand their energy usage better, while also opening up access to new smart tariffs and energy saving incentives. We're delivering on our purpose, which is to make Britain more connected so people can live smarter, greener lives."
