A new factory, set to be built in Hunterston, Scotland, will manufacture the world’s longest subsea cable that will carry clean energy from Morocco to the UK.

The £17bn project will power an estimated 7 million UK homes by 2030. Four 3,800km-long cables made of 90,000 tons of steel will transport 7 GW of solar and 3.5 GW of wind energy from the Sahara desert, carry it past Portugal, Spain and France, and deliver it to the UK.

The Morocco site will also become home to a 20GWh/5GW battery storage facility. Santosh Patel, director at project consultant firm Pick Everard said in Construction Enquirer: “We’re excited and proud to be involved in creating a new high tech green industry for the UK and supporting the drive towards net zero.

“From a manufacturing perspective, it will see undersea cables created to a length not previously seen, while consumers will be able to benefit from a much lower unit cost for their energy once the project is fully implemented.”
