Cheshire energy tech factory to hit net zero 8 years early

A Siemens energy technology manufacturing plant in Cheshire is set to reach its net zero carbon emissions targets by the end of this year, according to the firm.

The Congleton, Cheshire factory manufactures over 1.2 million controls and drives per year for the energy sector. Siemens implemented many sustainability and efficiency improvements as part of a partnership between Siemens and its energy and performance services business, Smart Infrastructure.

The site generates 75kw of renewable energy via a hydropower plant on the nearby river Dane, and uses carbon neutral biogas to power an on-site gas engine. Along with neutralising the site’s carbon emissions, these measures have so far contributed to estimated savings of over £250,000 a year.

"Siemens believes that sustainability is a force for good and can deliver value for all its stakeholders," said Andrew Peters, managing director of Siemens Digital Industries Congleton. "We want to help customers achieve sustainable growth and to transform their industries through decarbonisation. The first step of that is for us to achieve these ambitions in our own operations."
