National Grid seeks contractors for £9.3bn of contracts

National Grid Electricity Transmission is launching a major tender race for the construction industry, seeking partners for its £8.7 billion investment program.

The Great Grid Upgrade Partnership will adopt a collaborative procurement model and split the project into two lots: consultancy and construction works.

The program will cover a wide range of infrastructure projects, including overhead lines, substations, and underground construction. National Grid plans to engage 4-6 construction partners and two reserves, while also partnering with two consultants for design and environmental services. Consultants' fees are expected to reach £600 million.

The procurement process will involve a virtual bidders day in early June, with submissions due by the end of June and tenders invited in August.

National Grid CEO John Pettigrew emphasized the need for transformative approaches to meet the UK's decarbonization goals. The partnership aims to incentivize collaboration and innovation through a bespoke commercial model, with profits derived from incentive payments and cost reimbursements.

To set out the new procurement model, National Grid is planning a virtual online bidders day to be held on the week commencing 5 June. (to attend click here for email)
