MPs call for home insulation drive

MPs call for home insulation drive

An all-party parliamentary group (APPG) of MPs has called for a "war effort" to boost the energy efficiency of UK homes.

The BBC reports that the Environmental Audit Committee says a "window of opportunity" has been missed to get more homes insulated before energy bills rise further, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis.

The report also recommends a faster move away from fossil fuels, with greater focus on tidal power and wind turbines onshore.

Philip Dunne, the Conservative MP who chairs the Environmental Audit Committee, said to the BBC, "We must fix our leaky housing stock, which is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, and wastes our constituents' hard-earned cash.

"There have been significant missed opportunities in recent months: the Government could have gone further and faster."

UK homes are known to be among the least energy-efficient in Europe. Fewer than 100,000 home insulation upgrades were installed in 2021.

ECA has highlighted other ways the electrotechnical sector can introduce measures such as smart meters, heat pumps, solar panels, and other installations to help make homes more energy-efficient and cheaper to heat.
