UK EV gigafactories on the horizon

Tata Group has announced plans for an investment of £4bn in a new electric car battery manufacturing facility in Somerset.

This development is expected to create around 4,000 jobs within the factory and create a ripple effect of additional employment opportunities in its supply chain.

Regarded as the biggest landmark investment in the UK automotive sector since Nissan's in the 1980s, the plant aims to produce 40GWh of batteries annually, which will be sufficient to power hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles from 2026.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed this multi-billion-pound commitment as a testament to the strength of the country's car manufacturing industry and the high level of skill possessed by its workforce.

"With the global transition to zero emission vehicles well under way, this will help grow our economy by driving forward our lead in battery technology while creating as many as 4,000 jobs, and thousands more in the supply chain," he said.
