New private sector Construction Playbook to boost productivity

A number of construction industry leaders have backed a new private sector Construction Playbook, titled Trust and Productivity: the private sector construction playbook

Industry giants including ECA Member firm Skanska, British Land, Landsec, Mace, Sir Robert McAlpine and others, say the document will “help the industry reduce waste, address the skills shortage, and reduce the impact of low margins and investment in UK construction.”

The new Playbook contains ten drivers for success that it says should underpin any project:

  1. Form effective partnerships
  2. Adopt portfolio and longer-term contracting
  3. Take an outcomes-based approach
  4. Embed digital information flows across the whole life of an asset
  5. Involve the supply chain early
  6. Involve the supply chain early
  7. Allocate risk fairly and appropriately
  8. Pay fairly
  9. Assess the economic and financial standing of suppliers
  10. Promote innovation and continuous improvement

Nigel Webb, Chair of the Construction Productivity Taskforce, and Head of Development, British Land, said in Construction Enquirer: “By increasing productivity, the construction industry can play a vital role in driving economic growth, supporting the UK’s net zero ambitions and improving the economic health of the sector.

“This playbook seeks to identify ways to address some of the issues limiting construction productivity. I would encourage clients, contractors, designers and supply chain members to engage with the playbook and start to measure and identify ways to improve productivity.”
