Volvo to use car batteries in BESS

Volvo Energy is partnering with battery storage company Connected Energy to develop a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) using retired batteries from Volvo electric vehicles (EVs). They've signed a Letter of Intent to repurpose Volvo batteries after their initial use in mobile applications. This initiative aims to extend the lifespan of these batteries, benefiting the environment and the economy. Matthew Lumsden, CEO of Connected Energy, sees this partnership as an exciting opportunity to expand their technology into the European market as the volume of retired batteries from EVs is expected to increase in the coming years.

Battery energy storage systems are crucial for storing and optimizing energy from renewable sources, aiding grid stability and reducing the reliance on polluting fossil fuel power plants. These systems also enhance power supply for commercial buildings and EV charging stations in areas with limited grid capacity.

Using second-life batteries significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to new ones while increasing the value of EV batteries, which often retain up to 80% of their original energy storage capacity. Connected Energy's technology will enable the effective use of these retired batteries in stationary energy storage applications. This collaboration contributes to a more sustainable future for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
