1.29GW of battery storage coming to the UK

The UK's latest capacity market auction has awarded contracts for 1.29 GW of battery storage projects, at a clearing price of £17.47/kW/year.

The auction secured a total of 55.4 GW of capacity, including 3.6 GW of new build generation, and was oversubscribed by around 3 GW. The auction aims to secure sufficient capacity to meet peak demand in winter 2026/27 and is part of the UK's efforts to transition to a low-carbon energy system.

The contracts awarded will provide a source of revenue for the new battery storage projects, which can earn money by providing balancing services and supporting the integration of renewable energy.

ECA works closely with its Members, industry partners and Government to help Britain transition to Net Zero Carbon. We produce regular guidance notes, technical bulletins, and industry updates to keep Members at the forefront of the Net Zero transition. Learn more here.
