Businesses can often find it difficult to recruit and keep the right people, especially those employing skilled workers such as electricians. Apprenticeships represent a significant investment of time and money.

Historically, it has often proved difficult to get into the industry later in life. Older age groups find it hard to navigate the profession and there is a lot of bad advice and ‘training’ around. The ECA is working hard to make it easier to take up apprenticeships later in life, and part of this effort has been their decision to work with Yuno, the new recruitment app.

ECA often hears from its members that the biggest obstacle to recruitment is attitudes and behaviours. What employers want is someone who is committed, does things safely and takes pride in their work.

What is Yuno?

Yuno is a quick and easy app for businesses and workers matching them based on personality, business culture, interests and values, with a specific focus on a candidate’s long-term career. Yuno is looking to provide an increased pool of motivated candidates who are the right fit for each specific business or even a team within a business.

According to Richard: “Finding people who want to work is a problem. Some have not got the will or want to succeed but there are loads of people who haven’t been given the opportunity, people who could be extremely good at their job but don’t have the schooling, presentational skills or confidence. I am interested in how we find these types of people.”

Yuno supports UK workers that struggle to find out what options are available

Jakub Dyduch is currently a warehouse delivery driver. He finished high school in Poland with an IT technician degree, but has found that in practice “you need the contacts or a person who can give you a chance. I skip around from job to job, factory worker, construction or delivery driver depending on what is currently available to me, I don’t feel I have a choice. ”

Jakub tried the Yuno app and explained, “it’s great because it doesn’t force you to look at hundreds of jobs, it’s easy and quick and matches you up based on your interests and needs.” Jakub is a motivated and willing worker looking to find a place to develop and build a career, but doesn’t currently feel the way people are recruited will give him the chance to succeed. Yuno is looking to change that.

Supporting UK workers

Yuno supports UK workers that struggle to find out what options are available. Such situations can arise because of economic shifts created by globalisation, automation, or more recently Covid-19.

According to a report by the Resolution Foundation, there are millions of underutilised workers in the UK, not because they are bad workers, but because they are ill-equipped for change. By matching workers to employers based on personality, business culture, interests and values, Yuno is looking to provide an increased pool of motivated workers who are the right fit for each specific business.

The social startup Yuno is supported by the Department for Education and Nesta through the CareerTech Challenge which is part of the National Retraining Scheme.^[1]
