Artificial Intelligence - the future for energy storage

ECA Commercial Associate, ABB, has developed an innovative energy storage system, called Behind-the-meter’ (BESS) solutions.  BESS uses state of the art AI to integrate renewable energy generation, decentralised solutions and digitalisation. It delivers more effective energy storage.

As the transition to net zero energy gathers pace it is no surprise there is a fundamental shift in the energy landscape. With the new terrain comes a higher level of complexity, which artificial intelligence (AI) is helping to manage.

Decarbonisation

Energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, is attracting huge global investment. But naturally generated electricity has its limitations. It comes in gluts or not at all, leaving the users reliant on the grid or with excess electricity.

Decentralisation

Local energy generation, such as microgrids, give the peace of mind that an independent energy supply provides. Microgrids can run as part of the wider grid. But in an emergency, such as a power cut, they can stand alone. However, these also bring challenges. A microgrid needs careful ‘syncing’ to ensure stability and alignment between generation, demand and the central grid.

Digitalisation

Using digital tools will smooth out generation, demand and reliance on the grid. In turn, this is leading to even more advanced energy management software to optimise the generation, supply, and storage of renewable energy.

How BESS works

The unique innovation uses advanced machine learning. The system can handle, analyse and exploit data. By including forecasts for the weather or markets it will predict future supply and demand.

Decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation continue to redefine everything we know about producing and consuming energy. While this brings new complexity for operators, it also is an opportunity to reimagine and take advantage of innovation.

AI-enabled BESS will reduce energy use and optimise assets, as well as giving greater energy security and resilience.
