IPCC publishes ‘final warning’ climate report

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has published a report saying greenhouse gas emissions must peak by 2025 if we are to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels and prevent “climate disaster”.

As well as warnings about what might happen if we don’t slash our carbon emissions, the report lays out tangible solutions and cost estimates for carbon-cutting solutions which can be implemented immediately.

Jim Skea, a professor at Imperial College London and co-chair of the working group behind the report, said to the Guardian: “It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5C. Without immediate and deep emissions reductions across all sectors, it will be impossible.”

IPCC Chair Hoesung Lee said, “We are at a crossroads. This is the time for action. We have the tools and know-how required to limit warming and secure a liveable future.

“Today’s report marks the completion of the scientific trilogy. It is the last piece of the three IPCC Working Groups contributions to the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

“This report provides the most recent scientific knowledge for sound decision-making with unique information about all sectors to complement the regional aspects provided by Working Groups I and II.

“It confirms that the IPCC is the authoritative scientific voice of the United Nations on climate change. IPCC is the unique interface between climate science and policy-making.”
