West&West Ltd: Apprentices are the future of our business

This National Apprenticeship Week, ECA is highlighting the many pathways open to apprentices in the electrotecnical and engineering services sector, and the rewarding career opportunities that lie ahead. Today, read a post by guest author Daniel West, Project Director at ECA Member company West & West Ltd, about the positive impact his apprentices are already having on the business...

Our apprenticeship scheme forges strong two-way relationships, bringing short and long-term benefits to both parties. Training our own apprentices means we can develop individuals in a way that meets the specific needs of our business as well as our clients. These tailored skills give our business a lot of strength, helping us to gain a competitive edge and boost productivity.

The benefits of apprenticeships are vast. That’s why no-one can afford not to invest in the future generation of construction workers. We’ve been doing it for more than a decade and look forward to continuing to invest for many more years to come

For apprentices, our commitment to training not only helps them to gain valuable skills, but develop higher earning potential and more sustainable careers. They work incredibly hard and each has their own personal goals. As an employer, we are committed to helping them meet those goals and improve their life chances.

Apprenticeships also have a crucial role to play in the wider electrical industry, helping to raise standards. Electricians that have been properly trained ensure much safer and more effective installations for projects of all sizes and across sectors. Being properly trained means they have the ability to do far more than just run cables – it means they have a full knowledge of a building structure and its architectural elements as well as an understanding of what installation methods are suitable for certain scenarios.

Apprentices are the future of our business, allowing us to grow organically. Using the skills and knowledge passed down to us from previous generations, we train our own apprentices and shape how they grow and learn. We offer opportunities to people from our local community and provide them with a strong career path as well as the chance to learn from a talented team

The benefits of apprenticeships are vast. That’s why no-one can afford not to invest in the future generation of construction workers. We’ve been doing it for more than a decade and look forward to continuing to invest for many more years to come.”
