Wind to power all homes, says PM
Prime Minister Boris Johnson will say the UK is to become "the world leader in clean wind energy" in a speech at the Tory party conference today.
He will promise that every home in the country will be powered by electricity from offshore wind farms within the next 10 years. This will involve increasing off-shore wind capacity from the intended target of 30 gigawatts to 40 gigawatts by 2030.
"Your kettle, your washing machine, your cooker, your heating, your plug-in electric vehicle - the whole lot of them will get their juice cleanly and without guilt from the breezes that blow around these islands," he will say.
As part of the “build back greener” plan, Johnson will also pledge £160m to upgrade ports and turbine factories, with a view to creating 2,000 new jobs in construction and to support 60,000 more.
