Solar and hydrogen cabins for HS2 sites

Construction giants Costain and Skanska are using solar and hydrogen-powered site cabins on their HS2 sites in an effort to cut their overall carbon emissions by half.

So far, the 16 Ecosmart ZERO cabins have saved 112 tonnes of carbon over 21 weeks avoiding burning 40,000 litres of diesel fuel in standard generators.

HS2’s Environment Director Peter Miller said to Construction Enquirer: “With over 250 active work sites between London and Birmingham, we have a huge opportunity to roll out British-made products such as this solar powered cabin, to dramatically reduce the project’s carbon footprint, bringing environmental benefits to local communities as we build the railway.”
