ONS: construction grew 17% in July
New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the UK construction sector grew by 17 per cent overall in July 2020. Although sector output remains below pre-COVID levels, the data so far indicates significant recovery from the pandemic, albeit from a desperately low base.
The value of infrastructure work rose above pre-COVID levels – the first part of the sector to do so. It was 0.4 per cent above the £1.96bn recorded in February and 7.8 per cent higher than the value of infrastructure work in July 2019.
The weakest level of recovery was seen in private industrial construction, with output recorded at 30 per cent below pre-COVID levels.
