Transformer to land at Welsh beach

Transformer to land at Welsh beach

An electrical transformer the size of a large motorhome is set to be delivered to a National Grid substation in Trawsfynydd, Wales.

The new unit, which will replace an old transformer and help maintain a reliable supply of electricity to the local areas, will be delivered by barge onto a nearby public beach to avoid major disruption to  Porthmadog Harbour.

National Grid project manager, Wendy Williamson, said: “It’s a first for National Grid to have a transformer arriving onto a Welsh public beach, and certainly National Grid’s longest beach landing with 330m of track being laid, but we’ve been planning this for months to ensure we can deliver power reliably to the local area.”
