One of England’s last coal mines closes
One of the last coalmines in England closed down this week. The Bradley mine, near Durham, stopped production just two months after its sister site in Northumberland.
Only one small mine in Hartington, Derbyshire remains open, making it the last surface coalmine in England.
Coal provided around 40 per cent of Britain’s electricity as recently as 2012, but last year coal-fired power made up just 2 per cent of the UK’s electricity generation.
A spokesperson for BEIS told the Guardian there is currently no “immediate” date for any potential Hartington shutdown.
