TfL guidance for construction

Transport for London (TfL) has produced new guidance for the construction sector, now that an increasing number of workers are travelling to work.

As well as various general rules, such as wearing face coverings, the TfL guidance encourages the industry to consider the following:

  • Changing operating hours and/or staggering shifts to help the workforce avoid travelling during the busiest times on the network (05:45 to 08:15 and 16:00 to 17:30). Working with local planning authorities to change site operating hours further if necessary.
  • Working with neighbouring major sites to stagger operating times or workers’ shift times, to reduce the overall number of the workforces using local public transport stations and services during the busiest times
  • Allocating those shifts starting and finishing around peak travel times (05:45 to 08:15 and 16:00 to 17:30) to workers who can walk or cycle to and from work
  • Consolidating and retiming the transportation of materials and waste to and from sites to avoid the busiest times of day on the road network (currently between 06:00 and 09:00, and 16:00 and 19:00).
