Amazon challenged on non-compliant products
During a recent hearing (16 July) of the parliamentary Environmental Audit Committee, Amazon was reportedly challenged on the sale of non-compliant products on their e-commerce platform.
Green Party MP Caroline Lucas asked Amazon’s worldwide Director of Environmental Affairs Robert ter Kuile about electronic waste.
Lucas asked: “how do you ensure that overseas sellers using your platform are part of a producer compliance scheme for e-waste” and quoted research from Recolight that 76% of LED lightbulb listings were non-compliant and making “no contribution to UK recycling costs”.
In response, ter Kuile advised that compliance was the responsibility of individual sellers, but said that Amazon took non-compliance “very seriously”.
