Facebook heats homes with data centre

Facebook has developed a new heat recovery system which is set to recover surplus heat from one of its 100 per cent wind-powered data centres in Denmark and use it to heat homes in a nearby city.

The system, developed by Danish heating firm Fjernvarme Fyn, transfers heat generated at Facebook's 50,000 square-metre facility to radiators in buildings in the city of Odense.

Facebook says it could recover 100,000 MWh of energy per year, or enough to warm 6,900 homes, this way.
