E-scooters to take pressure off public transport
Local authorities in England, Wales, and Scotland can now apply to roll out Government-led trials of rented electric scooters. The move aims to relieve the pressure on public transport services and support social distancing measures during the coronavirus pandemic.
A Government statement reads, “To support a ‘green’ restart of local travel and help mitigate reduced public transport capacity, the Department for Transport (DfT) is fast tracking and expanding trials of rental e-scooters.
“E-scooters offer the potential for fast, clean and inexpensive travel that can also help ease the burden on transport networks and allow for social distancing.”
All local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales wishing to apply for a trial will be asked to submit a consolidated bid that demonstrates their proposed trial can meet the DfT’s requirements.
