180 MPs back Local Electricity Bill
The Local Electricity Bill was introduced to Parliament earlier this month as a private members bill.
Now backed by 180 MPs, the Bill will enable local electricity producers, such as households with solar panels and battery storage, to become local electricity suppliers.
Peter Aldous MP, lead sponsor of the Bill, said it will help address two challenges. He said, “By empowering and enabling new community energy companies to sell energy that they generate directly to local people and it will help strengthen local economies.
“This is urgently needed given the economic shock of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also accelerate our transition to clean energy, which is critical in avoiding the potential economic and ecological devastation of climate change.”
