On World Environment Day, new Net Zero commitments

On World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June every year, Secretary of State and COP26 President Alok Sharma has urged companies and cities to “unite behind a green global recovery” and join the new Race to Zero campaign, which will run until the beginning of the international COP26 climate conference in Glasgow in 2021.

BusinessGreen reports that the campaign, launched by the UNFCCC's Champions for Climate Action to mark World Environment Day, comprises roughly 1,000 businesses with annual revenues totalling £3.7 trillion, as well as 458 cities, 505 universities, 24 regions, and 36 major investors.

In parallel, the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment, first launched in 2018, has now attracted 95 signatories including companies, states, and organisations. The commitment is to ensure buildings emit zero carbon emissions by 2030 or sooner.
