Councils told to extend construction hours
Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick has called on English local planning authorities to not reject requests for extended construction working hours. Within the written ministerial statement, Mr. Jenrick said that requests up until 9pm, from Monday – Saturday, should not be rejected, without compelling reason.
Short term or modest increases to working hours may be agreed informally, whereas longer term or more significant changes will require a formal application. The Government has published FAQs with further information.
“With immediate effect, local planning authorities should take a swift and positive approach to requests from developers and site operators for greater flexibility around construction site working hours”, commented Jenrick.
“This is to ensure that, where appropriate, planning conditions are not a barrier to allowing developers the flexibility necessary to facilitate the safe operation of construction sites during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and to proceed at pace with work otherwise delayed as a result of COVID-19”, he added.
