UK and Italy call for climate plans
UK Business Secretary and COP26 President Alok Sharma and Italian Environment Minister Sergio Costa have urged governments around the world to submit enhanced climate action plans as part of their post-coronavirus economic recovery strategies.
In a joint op ed in the Times, published on Earth Day 2020, the co-hosts for the COP26 Climate Summit sought to accelerate global decarbonisation efforts, despite the economic crisis precipitated by the coronavirus pandemic.
They said a "global focus and resolve" has characterised the response to the pandemic, and a similar approach is needed to tackle climate change.
They added, "whether we live in the South or the North, the East or the West, we share one planet. It is important to remember, on a day such as [Earth Day], that all our futures are intrinsically linked."
