Three quarters of new energy in 2019 was renewable
A new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) says that, in 2019, almost 75 per cent of new electricity production around the world came from renewable sources. The data also shows that renewable energy generation technology now provides over on third of the world’s power – an unprecedented record.
Meanwhile, in the US and Europe, more fossil fuel power plants were decommissioned than built in 2019. However, the number of coal and gas plants grew in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
The report warns that, to tackle the climate emergency, annual investments in renewable generation must double by 2030.
