Public transport should replace cars, Government says

The Government has said that, in order to meet its 2050 net zero carbon goals, public transport, cycling and walking must eventually become the “natural first choice” for the public.

In the foreword to a Department for Transport consultation on decarbonising transport, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said, “Public transport and active travel will be the natural first choice for our daily activities. We will use our cars less and be able to rely on a convenient, cost-effective and coherent public transport network.”

Currently, more than 70 per cent of people outside London use cars to commute to and from work. Transport is the UK’s biggest single source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 28 per cent of emissions per year.
