New EU rules for electronic devices
The European Commission has proposed new ‘right to repair’ rules for phones and tablets, in an effort to reduce electronic waste and boost recycling.
Under the rules, device manufacturers would be legally required to make their products easier to repair and recycle. Currently, less than 40% of electronic waste in the EU is thought to be recycled, according to the Guardian.
Virginijus Sinkevičius, European commissioner for the environment, said, “The linear growth model of ‘take, make, use discard’ has reached its limits. The only way ahead is decoupling economic growth from extraction of primary resources and their environmental impacts.”
