Construction is ‘unsustainable’, say experts

An expert panel, hosted by Build UK, has concluded to an audience of industry leaders that the current ways of working in the construction industry are ‘unsustainable’.

The panel, hosted by Radio 4’s Chris Mason, included Nick Smallwood (Infrastructure and Projects Authority), Mark Farmer (Cast Consultancy), Ann Bentley (Rider Levett Bucknall) and Peter Lauener (CITB).

The panellists considered topics including procurement, skills, modern methods of construction, and net zero carbon.

Build UK said ‘the panel was clear that collective culture change was required’, with Mr. Smallwood pointing out that ‘it starts at the top’, giving the industry leaders in the room a clear role to play.

The key takeout from the session was whether the industry is ‘truly ready to do things differently’, noted Build UK.
