Hackitt addresses safety at construction summit

Speaking at the NBS Construction Product Leaders’ Summit in Birmingham last week, Dame Judith Hackitt said the construction industry lacks the necessary leadership to make it safer.

Chair of the board charged with introducing the new Building Safety Regulator and author of the government’s review of fire safety regulations after 2017’s Grenfell Tower fire, Hackitt said the standard industry practices she witnessed are “gob-smacking” and “jaw-dropping”.

She commented, “We need a culture change in this industry. You need to care about the buildings that you are in the supply chain for. You need to care that the people who are going to live in them and work in them and sleep in them feel safe and are safe. Until you care, this system will not change and will not work.”

The second phase of the Grenfell inquiry is ongoing. The report on the first phase can be viewed here.
