UKGBC issues zero carbon building roadmap

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) has published a new document called the Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap, coinciding with the last day of COP26 and its themed Built Environment Day.

The roadmap calls for new rules to limit the environmental impact of buildings through regulation of both operational and embodied carbon emissions.

The report also warns that the construction industry must take further action to cut carbon emissions to help the UK's chances to reach net zero by 2050. The roadmap includes several recommendations, including amendments to the Building Regulations to include energy usage intensity targets for all new builds from 2025.

UK Green Building Council chief executive Julie Hirigoyen said: “After all the talk, it’s time for action.

“The Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap pulls together disparate strands of recent policy and action into one coherent pathway, with clear recommendations for national government and local authorities, as well as the private sector and the wider industry. We urge policy-makers and industry to embed these recommendations into policies and strategies to make good on the promises and commitments of COP26.”
