Sajid Javid backs HS2 project

Chancellor Sajid Javid has reportedly backed plans for building HS2 – the high-speed rail line which is initially due to run between Birmingham and London.

The position was reached after Javid reviewed Treasury analysis of the impact of HS2, which is set to be the largest the infrastructure project in Europe.

Cost estimates for HS2 range significantly. In 2015, it was estimated to cost £56 billion, but leaked reports now suggest it could cost almost double that amount (£106 billion).

The Government is due to make a final decision on the HS2 project in the near future.
