Survey: quarter of UK households want to buy an EV

A survey of UK households conducted by Ipsos MORI on behalf of Ofgem has found that almost a quarter (24 per cent) of households in the UK plan to buy an electric vehicle (EV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle in the next five years.

The survey also found that those who already own an EV or hybrid were also more open to embracing changes in how they use their energy at home, with almost two thirds (60 per cent) stating they would consider using ‘smart charging’ to avoid busier periods on the grid, when power is more expensive.

Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem's chief executive, said in BusinessGreen that the energy regulator was working to enable significant investment in a more flexible energy system to support growth in demand for EVs, increase power generation from renewables, and accelerate the roll out of low carbon heat technologies.
