Formula 1 tech powers Kier crane
Fuel-saving technology developed to increase the efficiency of Formula 1 cars is set to be trialled in a Kier tower crane on a Lancashire site.
The flywheel energy storage technology, which transfers kinetic energy from the crane’s generator to a high-speed rotor, cuts its fuel consumption by 40 per cent. This resulted in 40 per cent less carbon emissions.
Mark Bown, national account manager at Sunbelt Rental, who have provided the technology to Kier, said in Construction Enquirer: “Sunbelt Rentals and Kier have been working together in partnership to reduce CO2 impact and provide social value to local communities of Kier sites. This technology is a large step in the right direction to move towards net zero carbon.”
