UK's first gigafactory to begin construction

The UK's first 'gigafactory', which will produce lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), is set to begin construction this summer.

British battery manufacturer Britishvolt will build the factory on the 235-acre (95 hectare) Blyth Power Station site, which it purchased this year from Northumberland County Council.

The factory is expected to be operational in 2023 and create around 3,000 jobs.

Britishvolt Chairman Peter Rolton said to the BBC, "This is a hugely positive and historic move forward for Britishvolt."

"Northumberland County Council has helped us secure the best site in the UK for a gigaplant."
