Contractors give prisoners a second chance

A new employment scheme developed by construction company Wates Residential is offering ex-offenders paid work on their construction sites and help to secure accommodation.

The New Futures Network, a specialist part of the prison service responsible for brokering relationships between businesses and prisons, supported the partnership between Wates, recruitment firm One Way and HMP Ford in West Sussex.

Construction contractor Balfour Beatty has also been recruiting from a larger and more diverse pool of talent, including ex-offenders, via a collaboration with Network Grid.

Jim Pridham, ECA President, commented, “I encourage employers to contact bodies like New Futures Network, and take a moment to consider that an ex-offender could become one of their most loyal future employees.”
