Report: heat pumps will cost half as much as hydrogen boilers
A new report by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) says that air source heat pumps would cost half the price of hydrogen boilers and are the most-effective low-carbon system to heat European homes.
The average cost for the installation and maintenance of a heat pump would be around £496 a year, including energy bills. The total average costs for a hydrogen boiler would come to around £1,090 a year.
Jens Geir, German MEP and rapporteur for the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee, said the ICCT study showed why hydrogen should still be explored and developed "for the sectors that are difficult to decarbonise, not for heating homes".
The report also said that heat pumps are three to six times more efficient than hydrogen boilers, as the transfer rather than generate heat.
