Workplace COVID testing expanded
Testing for people without the symptoms of Covid-19 is being expanded to all essential workers.
Last weekend, the government announced how it would be working closely with organisations across sectors that are vital to the running of the country, to encourage sign up to rapid testing programmes. This includes transport networks to food manufacturers, with the aim of identifying cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in employees who do not show symptoms.
With around 1 in 3 people who have COVID-19 not showing symptoms, targeted testing is highly effective at identifying people who have the disease and may be passing it on unknowingly.
Since the launch of the programme, thousands of employers have registered their interest in the scheme. For employers with more than 50 people, the government is offering free testing kits, currently until the end of March. Companies with fewer than 50 employees are being encouraged to use community asymptomatic testing sites run by local authorities.
