Coronavirus wage support reaches £15bn
New figures from HMRC for 2020 show that close to £15 billion was paid out to support self-employed and furloughed workers in the construction industry.
The total amount paid under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme in 2020 was £6.93 billion.
Furloughing peaked on 14 April with 723,600 staff on the scheme, falling to 130,700 at 31 October.
Construction Enquirer reports that construction has taken the ‘lion’s share’ of self-employed claims, accounting for a third of all pay-outs to the self-employed, far ahead of the single-digit percentage taken by other sectors of the UK.
