Open letter urges focus on heat pumps
An open letter to the European Commission from a range of utilities and insulation specialists has urged it to prioritise heat pumps over hydrogen within the European Green Deal.
This green deal is the overarching strategy that will set out the EU’s planned net zero transformation over the next three decades. It is being undertaken at the same time that the UK is also legally committed to fully eliminate or offset carbon emissions by 2050.
Insulation specialists Kingspan, Schneider Electric, the European Insulation Manufacturers Association, Saint Goban and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are among several dozen signatories to the open letter.
The letter states, “We believe that Europe must prioritise the most efficient, sustainable and cost-effective pathways to decarbonise the economy and create jobs.
“In this respect, all future EU policies and legislations concerning the EU gas market and infrastructures should be aimed at designing an energy system that goes beyond fossil gas to reach increased energy and climate targets by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050.”
