Government increases funding for EV charge points

The Department for Transport has announced that funding for residential street charge points for electric vehicles (EVs) will increase to £10 million next year. This could fund up to another 3,600 charge points across the country.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said, “We want to make electric cars the new normal, and ensuring drivers have convenient places to charge is key to that”.

However, a 2019 report from Capital Economics said that the UK would need to install 25 million electric charge points to become net zero carbon by 2050 – which equates to an average of 4,000 new charge points every day.
