Green light for largest UK battery plant
The government has greenlit the UK’s largest ever battery storage plant. The 320MW lithium-ion project will be built by Edinburgh-based energy firm InterGen at DP World London Gateway, on the Thames Estuary in Essex.
InterGen CEO Jim Lightfoot said to Energy Storage News: “We are excited to be entering a new phase in our growth as an organisation, and will continue to explore opportunities to develop projects which can support the energy transition.”
The 320MW project could provide enough energy to power over 280,000 UK homes, with potential to expand the to 1.3GW in future. Construction of the site is expected to begin in 2022, and operation of the battery in 2024.
InterGen says the project will be around 10 times the size of the largest battery currently operating in the UK.
