Labour urges England retrofits
The Labour party has called on the government to urgently invest in wide-scale retrofitting of homes in England.
Ed Miliband, Shadow Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Secretary said that homes in the UK are “some of the worst insulated” and “least energy efficient in Europe”, adding that improving the energy performance of UK homes is critical to meeting the Net Zero Carbon 2050 objective.
New research from thinktank IPPR North states that retrofitting homes across the North of England could create 77,000 new jobs in the region as well as 111,000 supply chain jobs across the UK by 2035.
Miliband said, “The government must rapidly invest in wide-scale retrofitting which would support the creation of jobs, tackling rising unemployment and the climate emergency at the same time.
“Labour has called for ministers to bring forward £30bn in capital investment in a green economic recovery to help create hundreds of thousands of low-carbon jobs in the next 18 months.”
