16 mini-nuclear plants planned
The Small Modular Reactor Group, a UK consortium led by Rolls-Royce and including the National Nuclear Company and Laing O’Rourke, have announced plans to build up to 16 so-called mini-nuclear power plants in the Midlands and the North of England over the next five years.
The group claims the developments could create up to 6,000 new jobs in those areas.
Tom Samson, the chief executive of the UK Small Modular Reactor consortium, said to the BBC, “If we move [nuclear] activity into a controlled factory environment that drives down cost by simplification and standardisation.”
As fossil fuels are phased out and energy demand rises, nuclear power is deemed essential to reaching the UK’s Net Zero 2050 goal.
