UK’s largest battery online
The UK’s largest battery storage system has come online in Thurcroft, South Yorkshire.
The battery array, run by the National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO), will help balance the grid as more renewable electricity comes into use and demand patterns change.
Energy firm Flexitricity will optimise the battery’s performance by remotely controlling its charging and discharging. This will ensure the array is financially viable and that it contributes to decarbonisation.
Flexitricity’s director Andy Lowe said in Edie news, “Investors are getting comfortable with the business case for energy storage and it’s great this year to be seeing a number of large batteries coming onto the system, providing more of the rapid response flexibility National Grid ESO needs to maintain system stability.”
